It is said that you may never know the value of what you have until you lose it. Such saying can be accepted to be true because most people only realize the value of their android devices when they are lost or stolen.

Android device manager is a Google app that allows you to track and secure your devices remotely. With this app, you can do the following:

Locate Android devices associated with your Google account
Reset your device’s screen lock PIN
Erase all data on the phone
For you to use the Android Device Manager, the following requirements must be met

The app must be installed. Most recent Android versions have it already installed. For older versions of Android, you can download it from Google play store.
Your device is connected with your Google account
Allow Android Device Manager (ADM) to locate your device which is turned by default. This can be changed in Google settings app
Allow ADM to lock your device
Tracking your device

In order to track and locate your device, you will have to sign into Google device manager web interface. Follow the steps below to track your device.

Go to https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager with any browser (Firefox, Chrome, opera, Internet Explorer) from any smartphone or computer
Sign in with your Google account for the device you want to track
From the homepage, select the device you want to track. If you used the same Google account for more than one device, those devices would be listed for you.
From the web interface, you cam locate the phone, ring it, lock it or even erase all the data on it


Note: For the device to be located, Location  must be turned on for that device.

Go to Settings->Personal->Location. Turn on Location. This must be done before the phone is lost unless the current holder luckily turned it on for you.

Also, the device must have internet connection wherever it is in order to communicate with Google servers.
